Employment: Full-Time | Location: Los Angeles, CA 90016 | Pay range: $22-$24
Position Summary
The Dental Assistant supports safe, welcoming dental care for children and adults in an FQHC through chairside assistance, patient preparation, and care coordination. Clinical duties require compliance with California law, verified training, demonstrated competency, and appropriate dentist supervision.
Essential Responsibilities
Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, materials, and patients; provide chairside assistance, suction, and instrument transfer during dental procedures.
Confirm patient identity; collect and document health history, medications, allergies, and patient concerns for provider review. Promptly escalate urgent concerns.
Capture intraoral and extraoral photographs. Take dental radiographs only after completing the required Board-approved radiation safety training.
Apply topical fluoride, including varnish, when ordered and under direct dentist supervision. Perform other delegated supportive procedures only within the DA scope.
Clean and disinfect treatment areas; process and sterilize instruments; maintain sterilization records and follow infection prevention, sharps, PPE, and exposure-response procedures.
Enter accurate, timely information in the dental record or EHR; record services actually performed and route clinical documentation for provider review.
Reinforce provider-approved oral hygiene, preventive care, and post-treatment instructions using language patients understand.
Coordinate with dental, medical, and scheduling teams on patient flow, referrals, follow-up, and missed appointments. Help identify language, transportation, or other access barriers and connect patients to available support.
Monitor supplies, expiration dates, and equipment readiness; report shortages or malfunctions. Support quality improvement, patient safety, and emergency response activities.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a dental assisting program or comparable training preferred. A California RDA license is not required for this DA position.
Board-approved eight-hour infection control training before supportive procedures involving potential exposure to blood, saliva, or other infectious materials.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required by the employer at hire and maintained; Board-approved two-hour Dental Practice Act course completed by hire or within the applicable statutory deadline.
Board-approved radiation safety course completion required before taking radiographs.
Clear communication, dependable attendance, attention to detail, basic computer skills, and respectful service to diverse patients.
Preferred Qualifications and Working Conditions
Dental clinic or FQHC experience; EHR proficiency; bilingual skills relevant to the community. Work involves patient contact, repetitive hand movements, sitting and standing, and handling clinical equipment, with reasonable accommodation as needed. Protect patient privacy and follow health center policies. This role does not independently diagnose, plan treatment, prescribe, or place sealants.
