Dental Assistant
Job Description
In our pediatric clinic, we want children to feel safe, understood, and proud of themselves when they leave the dental chair. We’re looking for a dental assistant who enjoys working with children and can help make that happen.
If you bring patience, warmth, reliability, and a willingness to learn, we’d love to meet you. Experienced pediatric assistants are encouraged to apply, and we’re willing to train the right person.
Who we’re looking for
Our ideal teammate is comfortable connecting with children of different ages, personalities, and abilities. You can stay calm when a child feels anxious, adapt your approach to meet their needs, and help parents feel informed and supported.
Ideally you are EFDA certified, but we will train new grads and experienced assistants who have not yet earned their EFDA certification. You must have an Oregon X-ray certification and be willing to pursue coronal polishing certification.
We especially value someone who:
- Enjoys working with children, including children with special needs.
- Communicates warmly and respectfully with families and coworkers.
- Notices what needs to be done and takes initiative.
- Is dependable, organized, and open to feedback.
- Helps create a supportive team environment.
What you’ll do
- Assist the dentist during pediatric dental procedures.
- Coronal polishing
- Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, and materials.
- Help children feel comfortable through reassurance and age-appropriate explanations.
- Take dental X-rays and perform other duties within your credentials and training.
- Maintain accurate patient records and treatment notes.
- Support sterilization, infection control, and room turnover.
- Help families understand home-care instructions and next steps.
- Work with the team to keep the day running smoothly.
Our practice uses Open Dental, digital X-rays, panoramic imaging, and an intraoral scanner.
Schedule and location
This is a full-time position based in SW Portland. Our core clinical days are Tuesday through Thursday, with some Mondays and Fridays.
The position also includes travel roughly 1.5 hours away, several days per month.
Pay and benefits
Pay is $26–$31 per hour for fully credentialed assistants, depending on qualifications and experience. Compensation for a training position will be discussed based on your current credentials.
Benefits include:
- Kaiser health, dental and vision insurance
- Paid time off and holidays
- 401k plan
- Travel reimbursement for travel days
